Obituary

Barbara Ann Bowen, 71, went to be with the Father on Saturday, December 28, 2019, as she was surrounded by her loved ones. She was born in Greenville, South Carolina to Thomas E. McGowan and Barbara N. Heyward McGowan on September 17, 1948.

Barbara was married to her husband, Bobby, for 40 years and they had two children together. She retired after 35 years from Southern Weaving, where she worked as a textile machine technician. She loved God and was of the Baptist faith. Barbara loved gospel music, especially if sung by Aretha Franklin and Mahalia Jackson. She also found great joy in cooking, entertaining for family and friends, and gardening.

She is survived by her two daughters, Donna Bowen and Treva Flowers (Tristan); six grandchildren: Allington Bowen, Sr. (Ayonna), Allison Bowen, Hakeem Flowers, Ashley Flowers, Josiah Flowers, and Kennedy Nelson; one great grandchild, Allington Bowen, Jr.; Stepson David Nelson (Shunda); four sisters: Donnette Jones (Claude), Alfreda Stokes, Thomasina McIntyre, and Angerena McKinney (Clifford); two brothers: Steve McGowan (Francina) and Wilburn McGowan; her aunt: Anna Vance; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Barbara is preceded in death by her husband, Bobby E. Bowen, a brother James Earl McGowan, and brother in law Billy McIntyre.

A Visitation will take place on Friday, January 3, 2020 from 11:00 am until 12:00 pm in the Graceland Mortuary Chapel, with the Service to follow.
