Obituary

John "Jack" Ward Smith, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and distinguished veteran, passed away peacefully on November 13, 2024, at the age of 92.

Born on March 5, 1932, in Ogden, Utah, Jack was the eldest child of Ward and Agnes Smith. He grew up in Grand Junction, Colorado, where he developed a love of learning, a passion for golf, and an enduring sense of adventure. A 1949 graduate of Grand Junction High School, Jack proudly represented his high school on the golf team before earning an A.S. in Physics from Mesa College in 1951.

Jack's academic achievements and determination earned him a congressional appointment to the United States Naval Academy, where he graduated in 1955 with a B.S. in Engineering. His education continued throughout his life, culminating in a M.S. in Management and Supervision from Central Michigan University in 1978.

Jack's 26-year career in the United States Navy was marked by dedication, bravery, and service. Rising to the rank of Commander, Jack served as a Navy pilot and instructor at the Naval Academy, with assignments taking him to Florida, Texas, Japan, Spain, Hawaii, and Vietnam, where he completed two tours during the Vietnam War. Jack received numerous medals and commendations during his service. After retiring from active duty, Jack continued to serve his country at the Joint Chiefs of Staff National Military Command Center at the Pentagon. He later brought his expertise to the Federal Aviation Administration, completing a distinguished career in public service.

In 1963, Jack met the love of his life, Dottie, a Navy nurse, and they were married a year later at the Naval Academy. Their union of 55 years was filled with mutual respect, love, and shared adventures. They lived in Annapolis, MD, Spain, Falls Church, VA, and Hawaii before finally settling in Fairfax, Virginia in 1975 and raising their children. In 1996, Jack and Dottie retired to Florida, where they enjoyed golf, tennis, and countless social activities with their large circle of friends. After Dottie's passing in 2019, Jack cherished the legacy they built together, which included two daughters, Constance Vasquez (Lupe) of San Antonio, TX, and Kim Stuart (Jim) of Greenville, SC. He was a proud grandfather to Morgan and Caroline Stuart, delighting in their growth and accomplishments. Jack is also survived by his brothers, Paul (Maria) of California, and Richard of Colorado.

Jack was known for his intelligence, sharp wit, unwavering loyalty, and generous spirit. He was a steadfast American Patriot and leaves behind a legacy of service, love, and strength that will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Jack will be laid to rest with full military honors at the Columbarium at the United States Naval Academy, alongside his beloved wife, Dottie. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a veteran's organization of your choice in his honor.
