Robert Marshall Cox, 86, of Greenville, SC, passed away Saturday, August 2, 2025. He was born August 11, 1938 to the late William Thomas and Lizzie Mae Kelly Cox and grew up in Piedmont, SC.
Robert was of the Baptist faith. He a veteran of the US Army, serving during the Cold War period in the early 1960s. After basic training at Fort Jackson, he was stationed in West Berlin where he saw the Berlin Wall and John F. Kennedy's famous speech. He once had guard duty in a watch tower along the wall of Spandau Prison, which held Nazi war criminals. After the Cold War, he served in the SC Army National Guard.
Robert retired from Managhan Mill and went on to become a dealer at the White Horse Road Flea Market for over 20 years. This was where he liked to socialize and he was well-liked by his many friends there - people came looking for the "Book Man." He enjoyed reading, writing, making up little stories and jokes, listening to music with his cassette player and headphones, watching TV, and playing the guitar.
In addition to his parents, Robert was pre-deceased by his wife of 29 years, Gail Whitfield Cox; two stepsons, David and Raymond Whitfield; two stepdaughters, Norma Jean Carroll and Judy Watts. He is survived by his son, Tommy Cox (Paula) of Greenville, SC; stepson, Floyd Whitfield of Holly Hills, FL; sister, Patsy Rowland of Greenville, SC; 13 grand-, great-grand-, and great great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Services to celebrate his life will be announced at a later date.
